I had a half wave diode based power supply, in which the diodes generated an 
astonishingly narrow (and high!) spike as they switched off every cycle.
I couldn't resolve the spike on my 35MHz cro, but guess it was ringing on the 
AC low voltage psu supply lead. This coupled into everything!
Yes, it has harmonics up to god knows where, but it sounded like psu hum.

If a spike is on an oscillator's waveform, I doubt you could hear it.
