1st rule of 4000 series CMOS design - get yourself some catalogs - 
Mouser, Digikey, Jameco, whatever.  Before you design around a chip, look 
it up, make sure it's available and affordable.  There's nothing worse 
than spending an hour or two perfecting your confabulator design, only to 
find that noone carries a 40666.

Other tips - get yourself some databooks, as well as Don Lancaster's 
classic "CMOS Cookbook".  Always helps to have a general logic design 
book to sort out the 1s & 0s, if you can't remember.
