Yep you got the idea, sounds like the illegitimate offspring of a 
pulse wave and a sawtooth    <g>

Strictly speaking it wouldn't be too hard to bolt a VC sync onto 
Gene's design, to vary the sync from hard to  soft, but it'd need
 another comparator though, and I ain't going to do it yet....
