re-coding Synth ROMs ???

Hi,
	I've seen various people discussing third-party software upgrades
for old synths (ie Encore Electronics).... how do people go about working
out what the code does? I ask because I'd really like to modify the
behaviour of my OSCar (give it a better MIDI spec etc.).

Am I on a loser here? AFAIK there are no OSCar schematics available and,
when I once disassembled the code, there were various subroutines that I
could not fathom at all!

Has anyone else had any experience of this kind of job? (I suppose that
I'm asking too much for an OSCar service manual!?)
