Power Supplies for DIY Synths

When thinking about power supplies, I recall some things I noticed about
high end audio power supplies. I remember looking at the Carver amplifier
literature, and they bragged about how their transformer did more per
weight than standard transformers. It drew a lot of current from the wall,
but never got too hot and only drew the power that was needed for the audio
signal to the speakers.

Later, I was looking at some pro audio literature for the Celestion SR
series speakers. They had a speaker power unit that went in between the
amplifier and the speakers. This rack mounted unit performed a similar
function of controlling power going to the speakers so that none was wasted
and the sound signal would be super clean.

Are there some design tricks we can take from the world of high end audio
and pro audio?

Sincerely,

Fred
