I think that a lot of professional studio gear (desks and the like) use 
+/-15V, and in a lot of cases +/- 24V rails. The bigger the supply 
difference, the more (potential) headroom, larger output signal, better 
S/N you're going to get. 

Would a larger supply (ie +/-15V, +/- 24V) be more immune to thermal 
drift? I would have thought so....

Reliability shouldn't be a problem providing that all the components are 
safely rated for the supplies being used (ie not being run at Absolute 
Maximum ratings all the time).
