Would it have any advantage over a simple reverse biased transistor ??

If you're aiming for the most expensive gear to produce simple noise,
you still can't compete with Robert Schroeder: Legend goes that he
has used radio signals from Galaxy Cygnus A as a noise source on
his so-titled album. Don't know if it has any advantage, though ...
