Potentiometers: what do you suggest??

You could put a 1M fixed resistor in parallel with an appropriate value of
linear pot. I forget the details but the fixed res is called sonmething like a
'log-law-faking resistor'. This method is used by audiophiles who want to make
the best stereo pots but know that dual-ganged log (audio taper) pots have
lousy tracking compared with linear ones. I believe that the value of the fixed
res. determines how 'aggresive' log effect is. The Andrew Russ (??) catalogue
in the UK explains this (can anyone fill in the details?).
