Potentiometers: what do you suggest??

Keep acid core away from electronics. You'll regret it later. Special solder
is available for soldering aluminium to aluminium or dissimilar metals. The
local hobby electronics shops over here stock it, though I've never tried
it. As far as pots are concerned down here, you buy what you can get -
there's very little range, and almost everybody stocks the same thing. But
that's Australia for you.
