The 'A' series was your basic CMOS product. It did not have any input static protection.
The 'B' series has input protection (series resistor with diodes to both supply rails) and output buffers.
Finally the 'UB' series have input protection but no buffers.
With regard to interchangeability it's best not to swap 'B' and 'UB' ('A' and 'UB' can be used as linear devices! I
think several guitar "valve sound" fx boxes use 'UB' inverters). The buffers do increase the fan out.
