Eric, if you do much more of this I will have to go find my high voltage
scope probe and dust off the VTVM :)  So far the only valve-glow in my
garage is from audio amps and Hammond organs, but if you persist in this
maddeningly intriguing project reporting, that may change soon. (I hate it
when some unexplored science takes over my brain!).

Will you, perchance, scan up some simple schematics onto a web page, or
somehow otherwise provide guidance to those of us who are
thermionically-challenged....
