FYI

The term "8va" is the correct classical term for "up one octave"
eg: "up an octave from where the music is written" The term "8vb" would
also indicate "down an octave from where written".

These terms has been in use for at least a couple hundred years. It is
not a new abbreviation for octave at all. Good question though.
