The best way to learn would be to build a discrete VCO. These all in one
chips arte a) hard to get and b) a black box.

Try Gene's ASM-1 http://www.it.kth.se/~e93_mda/synths/companies/stopp/

He sells a PCB and schematics. It's up to you to put it together, but being
discreet, you should be able to study the various circuits.

Also look at Synth DIY mirror archive at http://www.ultranet.com/~mute/

It has both Formant and Penfold synths online. These should be read for the
theory, but not built due to hard to get parts in the case of the Formant,
and poor/unstable design in the case of the Penfold.
