Try white noise with a piano-style amplitude decay (maybe a bit faster), run 
through a lowpass filter that is _right_ on the edge of resonance. Adjust the 
filter cutoff to get the deisred pitch of the 'ping'. Add a touch of reverb, 
and you're away!
