Hi!
I made some experiments with noise modulation of VCOs over the weekend.
No soldering (no time at the moment), but simply patching some JH-3
modules
together.
Some results:
* No great difference between linear and exponential FM.
* With my standard white noise source I found that the low frequencies
still dominate
the modulation very much. Increasing modulation depth results in
"unstable" drifting
way before I get a "dirty" character. This is not what I would have
expected. But then again,
I don't know how "white" my noise source actually is ...
* Put the noise thru a SEM-style 2pole filter in high pass mode before
it goes to modulate the
VCOs. This sounds very interesting with rather high cutoff frequency
(experiment in the
500Hz to 1kHz range!), and low Resonance. Makes the sound "dirty"
without detuning it
too much.
* A certain amount of noise modulation does sound very different
depending of the VCOs
frequency. Keyboard tracking of amount and/or HP cutoff frequency (see
above) would
be a good thing. But that's where I stopped experimenting and fell
into playing a long piece
of music ...
