Many Thanks to you People for all of your answers
to my 2 mails of yesterday. :-)
Now a summary of answers:
First PC's second ATARI third DEVO,fourth pots.
1:Yes, I'am totally insane when it comes to PC's
But much lesser insane when it come to Modular synthezisers.
What i ment with:
>I can only say one thing, what a hassle and stress thing this
>Personal Computer issue are,I dont need a 250 watt's of power?
>The dude who designed PC's and their associated supplys must bee
>totally insane!
was that, computers from 1995 and forward dont need a 250 watts
supply, and yes i do know the Cmos design of XT/AT and
their power requirement.
No i have not muffled the fans, im sorry for my incomplete sentence,
what i ment was: i have filled the sides of the PC cover with 6mm
compact rubberfoam, not the entierly space in the box!
Actually i have removed some cover plates at the bottom of
the box to increase the air flow,..so i dont think it
would explode! :-) Anyway i run my PC until goes dead again
because the 125 W supply cost only $3,80 USD.
BOMB proof Dec Alpha NT4, well what can I say,,,
At my former employer as an CAD/CAM, RF design engineer
at their Research/Development section for mobile phones,
I used to run different machines like Sun/solaris
IBM Risc and HP 7000 series Risc HP-UX macines.
And this where just a wery big hassle of non working matter.
We did have 2 HP UX machines for network conections
and i had one Sun computer runing DDE's cad/cam tools
controlled remotely by a HP 7000 (insane)
and one machine HP 7000 Ux machine runing Mentor/Cadence/ and one
more PCB program that i can't remember the name off.
and also a 486 runing win 3.11 and Protel ADV PCB/Schema.
Now, imagine this incompatible sittuation for a couple of years
and suddenly I had enough!
So I and a fellow designer throw out the alaways failuring network
machines
to be replaced by 2 Pentiums runing NT,and after that we did not have
any more problems.
And then I throw out my IBM Risc, the two HP 7000 Ux and the Sun
machine,
then I uppdated the 486 to a Pentium and to Win NT and only runing
ADVPCB/SCH by Protel.
Now ,imagine this ,the combination of Pentium 133Mhz Protel/NT
where 3,7 times faster then the super-super fast HP7000 runing Mentor
CAD
The people at both Mentor and the computer departement
at this copmany(one of the largest manufacturer of Mobile Phones)
did not belive me, they just did go on laughting until
they did the wery same test.
Also, this combination where 3,5 times faster then the SUN/DDE's
Spectra combination, and keep in mind that the Software for
DDE super max Silicon/PCB programs cost around a 500 000skr
64900 USD,50 000ukp plus kost of the Spectra autorouter.
And all to the same functionality degree ,..... What a waste of money!
No, i dont say that Protel are the best PCB program or that
Mentor are the worst either!
No thanks i have had my chare of superfast, superpowerhungry,
super hassling computers,.....have a look at a Atari Falcon or TT
runing Scooter or ConectiCad for example, runing those machines
at 16Mhz to 25 Mhz would outperform many Pentiums with W3.11/NT and
Unix machines in both speed and cost in dollar for example.
Actually i dont need the fastes available computer, fairly
fast and super stable are more of a motto.
Why did i buy a ATARI? Well i wanted a MAC but could not pay
the asking price, so the atari are the poor man's Mac realy.
To the Questions about my 1040 computer.
2:For my 1040 Mb 4 computer i tok out a lowpower
Qantum LPS1524 220Mb MFM HD from my old 486 PC,
bought a AT-TOS bus card from Heine Svendsen
at his company INDIGO 2 , http://www.cybernet.dk/users/indigo2.
(he is a wery nice person and help full)
This small interface are made by a German company named
Hard unt Soft.
Then i designed a wery small and tiney 72 pin 4 Meg DRAM interface
and expanded the memory, soldered the card and memory exp in,
plugged the HD in and formatted the unit and everything works fine.
As you should know i have done heavy modifications to my 1040,
i have cut the PCB and fitted the thing into a 1U rack box.
I think i payed some thing like 700skr/90usd/70ukp
for this AT bus card back then, today i think its cheaper.
But if you dont wont to do any soldering, they have a
wery small interface named Link96/97 SCSI II
that plugs into the DMA port of the Atari and then
you can use any today available SCSI devices to your ATARI.
Also i think this device cost a little more
but that could be worth it.
Do have in mind that the ATARI range of computers are
extreamly popular in Erupe much more then in USA.
Therefore it still lives on today and there are lots
of new hardware clones , Medusa, Hades etc, and the very new and
promissing french Phoenix and ST Milan both of these
are due to release in august and are a new development of
the Falcon an TT, and at prices lower or equal to
PC and Mac's.(well they say so!)
3:I sav a DEVO picture some yers ago with Mark dressed like
puppy doll and sorunded by (mostly) Moog and other equipment,
its funny how you can be able to recognise manufactures
of analogue synths by their usage on different records.
(not so easy by digital synths synclavier and fairlight perhapps!)
When DEVO had a play in sweden in 1990 i think they
used two minimoog's and a load of Roland S50
and for drums Simons SDS9 set.
Does any one know if Simons are still alive or
have a recived a graveyard stone from the grimriper?

4 Since there have been and still do talks about
different pots.
How about summing this issue up.
I have experience using:
Maker....Mount......Shaft.......Bushing....Material....Shaftshape....number..........Others..........
Phier H-PCB 4mm Plastic 7mm Carbon Round
486 Panel controll.
Radiohm H-PCB 4mm Plastic 7mm Carbon

Bourns S-PCB 11 turn no cermet
3224W trim pot.
Iskra H-PCB 6mm Plastic no carbon Round/jagged

C-PCB=cable mounted to pcb.
H-PCB=hole mounted to pcb.
S-PCB=surface mounted to pcb.
Summary:I'm using collet Knob for phier pots with different collors on
top cap.
Pot wery cheap in 10 ore more, good performance, shaft are stable, fairly
available
Collet knob farily cheap in large quantitys only.small size on both knob
and pot.
