I found that in most synth circuits (apart from VCO discharge, which
is a different story), it's more important to have a similar threshold
voltage (the GS voltage where Id becomes 0), than a specific
model number. Many FETs in synth circuits were selected for
this parameter. 
A SEM VCO or a VCS 3 Trapezoid will work with a variety of
different small signal FETs, but if the the threshold voltage is wrong,
you might end up with wrong Waveforms in the SEM and a Tapezoid
that won't cycle in the EMS.
I use BF245 (the "standard" low cost FET in Germany) all the time, and 
select them for the application.
