Old capacitors

I used to repair cable TV amplifiers and nothing went out the door without
new filter caps. It just wasn't worth the risk. One would inevitably come
back even with only a 90 day warranty. If the client wanted a one year (or
longer) warranty, we went the extra distance and installed surge
protection.
Sylvania called us up one time to find out why their line extenders didn't
burn up after we had worked on them. It seems that they put the fuse in
AFTER the bridge rectifier. Without surge protection, the diodes would
short out and melt the power transformer (big diodes). I guess nobody knew
any better back in those days (1985).
