*HUGE* Deja Vu!
Erik, you and I had the SAME conversation about a year ago when I got my
custom Moog "25". It has a 5 band "formant" filter and you asked EXACTLY
the same question! :)
We aren't talking about filters that extist in the "Formant" synthesizer,
we're talking about a class or style or type of filter known as a formant
filter. Formants are pieces of sounds you make when you speak, and a
formant filter is a filter that is designed to obtain those sounds.
Basically, a formant filter is a parametric EQ with wide sweepable bands, a
TON of gain in each band, and a feedback loop (resonance). Most of the
formant filters that I've worked with use a 10 turn pot for the resonance
so that you can get the filter to hang *right* on the edge of howling
feedback. *This* is the sound of a vocal formant.
Wow... Acid flashback. :)
