How to make good looking front panels ?

I usually drill my panels, sand them with sandpaper then fine steel wool,
primer, then white enamel. Up to this point it's worked well, and costs
peanuts. I think all the paints together with the steel wool cost around
$11 at Sears. 

One question I had: I had trouble finding rub-off dry transfer letter that
were small enough to put on the panel, so I used larger letters and now it
looks like crap. I would like to redo my panels with smaller letters so
it looks cosmetically a lot better. Is there a mail order place that has
different sizes of these, or should I just go investigate a place like
staples?
