Replacement parts (ASM-1 related)

I've finally ordered the remaining parts for the ASM-1 circuit board
and most of the mounting hardware for the faceplate. I ran into a snag
though, and thought I might share some information and ask a few
questions along the way...
According to my contact at Newark Electronics, the 2N4856 is a
discontinued part. However, there are replacement parts that can be
substituted for this, the NTE466 or ECG466. Has anyone tried these?
Also, I'm working on the Formant VCO, and of course practically ALL
the parts for it are impossible to find. So I'm working on alternative
devices for it since it seems like just a smashing circuit to work with!
For starters, the uA726 is non-replaceable, so I'm going to try a
MAT-02 instead.
But for the various transistors, I'm having difficulties trying to
find suitable replacements.
For the BC107C and BC109C, there is the NTE123A.
For the BF245 there is the NTE133.
However, when I looked up the specs on these things compared with
notes that I was able to find looking through dusted books in the
engineering archival room, these don't seem to really cut the cake.
Instead, I found the NTE199 and NTE234 to be closer to the BC107/BC109
specs. Anyone (with better knowledge of transistors) know more about
this?
