The BC109 (without a B or C suffix) has a typical current gain of
200 (at Ic = 2 mA), and is typically used for its low noise specs.
Therefore, I'd recommend using, for example, a 2N5089 (National,
Motorola) as substitue, if the gain parameter isn't critical.
(The 2N5089 has a gain of 400).
