Well in the time between my last response and now I've tried a few
more things. First of all it looks like it's best to keep the input
signal at 4V p-p or lower, because of what appears to be a long-term
minor DC drift in the input electrolytic cap.

I'm picturing Gene at his workbench, a logged-in laptop on his left
side, a power supply and scope on his right side, a mass of
proto-board, wires and components in front of him, a cup of coffee
teetering on the shelf, the cat purring at his feet, an ELP bootleg
playing in the background, and a soldering iron clenched in his teeth.
Man, what a trooper.

Maybe I should point a heat gun at it next, and see if anything drifts
   over temperature?

Or warm up the coffee.
