In the case of having a digital signal modulating this is certainly a
very good way to do it. Few people seem to realize that the DACs they
are using is really a multiplying DAC. There is many DACs to choose
from with respect to resolution and digital interface. I think that
the use of multiplying DACs should be considered more often then it is
today...

The main difference between a VCA and a multiplying DAC is the
modulation signal... but another difference is the distorsion. This
whole distorsion thing is a completesubject off it's own, and I think
that the distorsion topic should be dealt with separatly.

However, if you have a low distorsion signal you migth pass it
througth a distorsion unit to get the wanted effect but if you has a
distorted signal you may not undistort it.... I would go for a clean
charactar first and then distort in various ways separatly.

For myself I am so bloody tired about the typhical 'Hi-Fi audio'
chatter about this being better than that, idioticly thick cabels,
small plastic beads on the power line, religous sessions with Bill the
cat or whatever.... however we refine technology we eventually find
that people get lost anyway....
