ASM-1 and JFETs

Okay, I got the first VCO wired up, and it doesn't seem to be oscillating. I
get a bit of signal, but not much, except when I twiddle the PWM knob.
There's a range where I can get some fuzz, but that's about it. Both VCO's
do the same thing, so I suspect it's more likely a wrong component, and my
first guess would be the JFET. 

When I called to order parts, they told me the 2N4856 had been discontinued,
but that they had an exact replacement, the SK9163. Trusting and naive as I
am, I ordered two of them. Now, is this anywhere near what I need, or should
I go hunting the real thing?
