You can work around MIDI's note-on/note-off orientation by using
controllers, but this works best for solo voices.  To do two at once,
you need to put them on different channels, and this doesn't scale
well when you've only got 16 to work with.  So I strongly agree with
the desire for more channel bits.

Actually, what I'd really like would be to have the notion of an
"instance".  This field would functionally be the low end of the
channel field -- the idea is that a polyphonic synth could listen on a
single channel (per patch), and hear controller messages tagged for
each of its active voices, modulating them independently.
