Simple 4 Bit ADC?

I can think of two ways - first, you can make a textbook A/D converter
     with a 4-bit counter, a 4-bit latch, a 4-bit R-2R ladder DAC made from
a handful of resistors, and a comparator. The conversion time will be
fast but finite, limited by the clock rate of the counter and the slew
     rate of the comparator.

Second, you can make a flash converter out of op-amps. This type of
converter has a much faster conversion time, but uses a whole bunch of
different valued resistors. There's a schematic for exactly this (a
4-bit converter) in an old issue of "Polyphony", which I can dig up if
     you want.

Can someone point me to a simple circuit that will convert 0 to 10 vDC
to a 4 bit digital output?
