This is an excellent point.  The Gate LED *is* driven by firmware, and
will not light if the MIDI channel is not set to receive messages on
the channel your controller is sending them.  Once you get the gate
LED to come on, you know your MIDI channel is correct, if there is
still no sound, your problem is probably an analog section / power
problem.
