Modular may have another use?

Hi all,

This may be slightly off-topic but... does anyone know how these water
conditioners work? They act like water softeners but they work on
alternating magnetic fields which indirectly affect the water's dissolved
ions. It appears they use a vco with drives a coil which is wrapped around
the water pipe as it enters the house. The vco is modulated from 500Hz to
about 8KHz with a LFO, I think. The amplitude is also modulated as well. I
am definitely going to be looking at this in the near future but does
anyone know what levels I should be using. I think it may be a case of
trying different levels and frequencies and seeing what happens. I'm not
quite sure how to detect if it actually works... maybe I'll measure the
conductivity...anyone been here before?
