Just an idea - you could get some cheap laser diodes ( I have seen
laser pointers for sale at discount office stores for about $20 these
days - excellent cat toy as well! )
Have them set up near one end of the stage and set to point at
photocells at the other end of the stage - use a little bit of smoke
to make the beams visible and let people block the beams with their
hands...
