The generic ones can be programmed for different makes of TV sets - 
you could probably find several which could operate simultaniously 
without jamming each other.  Use an IR Diode and make a program to
read off the signals...

YOu would probably want some visual feedback as well - maybe something 
with lights so that the people knew their button pushing had an 
effect.  Some sonic changes would take a while to evolve or be too 
subtle to be first noticed...
