The single transistor rectifier idea could be expanded
to a differential amp, with emitter followers for both
differential outputs. The emitter followers emitters are tied
together. This should eliminate thermal drift, though there is some
offset to the rectified output voltage. This offset is taken away with
diodes or zener diodes in hf circuits. The circuit is said to work up to
some 100 MHz. In audio frequencys an op-amp adder could do this.
