RS-232, MIDI and SCSI; oh my!

I agree. I'd rather see this discussion get down back to earth where
it started : Modular standards and synth controls.

Seems everytime something that has to do with MIDI or communication
between devices comes up, this triggers a mass of posts about different
computer communication protocols. Say, do a lot of the people on this
list work in that area?

MY GOD! what have i done!
Well, yeah, i worked as a computer tech long enough to know about this SCSI
etc. silliness..
The ONLY reason i had mentioned it is because SMDI is already a protocol
that is being used RIGHT NOW! its NOT some future mumbo jumbo voodoo! They
have it on samplers already, and supposedly they are getting ready to
implement it in some of the new synths coming out that are of are variety
(analog multi controller type DSP synths) So why not use it? I am pretty
sure that if these companies are coming out with it, they must ALREADY have
drivers for it to run the SCSI buss off of PC/MAC. That is the ONLY reason
i agreed when it was mentioned, and in my class, when I saw how SCSI
worked, I thought, GEE, this is something to really look into.I compared it
with MIDI, and it seemed a WHOLE lot more straightforeward than all the
little bits o' hardware midi needs.. And, granted, we will STILL prolly
NEED midi for compatibility, BUT, in the studio, id rather not have to
worry about killing the midi bandwidth every time i wanted to move a lot of
knobs. After all, it IS a modular, and MEANT only to be really practical in
studio use or limited use on stage.OR we can limit the number of
comtrollers actively sent so that midi CAN handle it... It was basically
JUST an idea :))))
