Or maybe just adapt old pc mouse encoders.

I just picked up some really cool shaft encoders at a swap meet for 50
cents each - probably 300 or more "windows" per rotation.  But not a
commonly available item for such a cheap price so I didn't intend to use
them for music stuff.  I was thinking of encoding my telescope movements.
