This gets my vote. RECORDING, in our May issue, ran an editorial by
Steve Holiman on the impact that abandoning ISA would have on
consumers in the PC audio world, both in the short and the long
term. The editorial slant there was "don't assume ISA is already dead,
because there will be at least two more generations of audio cards
before support is dropped and it may well be the best solution for you
right now".
But synthesizers are not and should not be as disposable as audio cards.
I wouldn't buy a synth on an ISA card, no matter how good it sounded,
because I have no access to ISA-based equipment, do not plan on buying
an ISA computer just to run the card (unless someone wants to sell me
a luggable with one slot that'll be capable of running the damn synth),
and would REALLY prefer being able to use my PCI Mac for this stuff.
Just my two cents' worth.
