Amen to the "brushstroke" metaphor!  (Love my Prophet5)  Wasn't there a
software program for the MAC several years ago that lets you "patch" on a
screen?  (Was it called MAX using CSound?)  

I think that a good virtual patchable modular using touchscreen would make
a nice economical way to give you that tactile experience with the added
benefit of configurability new technology.
