No, it is peculiar to making the layout tall and narrow.
I prefer short and wide - makes the signal flow a lot easier to follow
and you get less patch-cord traffic jams. I have the control voltage
processing and sequencers on the left, then signal generation, filters,
noise and the ring modulator, envelope generators and finally VCAs and
matrix mixers. This general layout follows the "classic" synthesizer
signal path and makes patching it very easy.
