The Digisound stuff is very good. I have about 15 modules and I know of people
with rooms full of it!
The stuff is very modular and the circuits are pretty straightforward and well
explained. All modules use 100k in Impedence and 1K out. Most signal levels
are 10v p-p. Some modules use SSM chips, I think this is just the Dual Env Gen
and the Ring Mod, although I think these were later updated to 3310 and 1496
respectively. Or maybe they superseeded the Dual EG with the VC Env Shaper
that uses the 3310.
The VCO's main failing is that it is not switchable in Octaves, although I
perticularly enjoy this feature as it does not restrict the mind to equal
tempered scales! The VCO is very "full on" , probably due to the large p-p
voltage. The VCF modules again are a nice design around the 3320. I only have
the VCLPF.
The dual VCA is packed full of features too.
Several of the modules are based around descrete designs e.g. quad LFO, Ring
Mod, S&H, Noise, Ext In, Processer, Patcher etc.
All in all this was and still is a very good system. They were quite popular
in Britain once upon a time and still are quite sought after. The mini
booklet/stack of A4 pages called :Using the Digisound 80 (or something like
that) is also a very good read.
the Digisound is certainly a good candidate for bringing back to life, its
been loved and cared for by many people for nearly 2 decade's. Its note
totally CEM based, because a lot of the modules don't require it. The meat of
the system does rely on the 3310/20/30/40 combination tho. All in all I think
its a good system. The chance to build new ones would be excellent.
Cheers, Dave...
