Poking around and let the magic smoke out..OOPS!

Well,
This is kinda off the beaten path, but I was wondering if anyone knows
what happens with this kind of situation.
The story goes as follows: I overheard someone in the Music-dsp list
talking about a new DSP chip that is used in some of the new german dsp
analog simulation gear.. Well, I have a Rave-o-lution 309, and some synth
repair
experience, so i figured, ok, Ill take a look, because it also aroused my
curiosity.
The unit does sound very analog, similiar to the Rebirth, but hardware
based.
Well, when I opened the unit, I realized that to get the top panel off, you
must first
reach under the front panel and FEEL your way around inside to disconnect
the
controls on the front panel BEFORE you can actually fully see what youre
disconnecting.
I have had to do this before, so i thought, ok, no prob. I peeked
underneath to see
what I could on the circuit board, and seen a label on one of the
connectors that I COULD
see. I decided that, more than likely, ALL the connectors would have the
same labeling.
So disconnect I did.
Well, after poking around inside, it turns out that the weasels decided to
SCRATCH
the MODEL #'s off of many of the chips, ESPECIALLY the DSP's! Ok, time to
put it all
back together..
Well, low and behold, we have all the other ones that made sense, ie
display, con1, con2,
BUT we have two jacks that say AUDIO..AND only ONE audio connector. Uh-oh
Well, needless to say, I HAD to pick the wrong one..They both had the same
type of
connector.. And , I turned it on, and *poof* the magic smoke all came
out..Everything else
works, but the audio section is toast. I burnt up a couple of 1n4148 diodes
and a couple of 1n4001
diodes. Along with who knows what else. AND its almost ALL surface mount..
I also found
an LM311 surface mount ( i have a couple of these). So, i am debating
whether to get milked and
possibly told to scrap it by Quasimidi USA, or to just forgo the whole
thing and try to fix it myself.
I know that, especially in the case of this particular unit, the encoding
knobs, display and case
prolly cost more than the ENTIRE mainboard. I mean, hell, I priced the
knobs, and they cost 12 bux a piece! And the case is about 60 bux. The
mainboard only has about 4 chips and a couple of audio jack on it..
If ANYONE knows what would prolly be best in this case, lemme know..
