You question:
>Q3; The processors in the P6 are designated "8048" and "8049". What exactly
>are these? 8 bit processors? Did they go on to become popular in other
>synths, washing machines, etc, later in the 80s? Are there cross-assemblers
>etc in existence?
The 8048 was Intel's first single chip micro. These are very much like the
new 8051/31/etc. You can still get these at some surplus places. See
www.robotics.com/surplus.html for some pointers. You can get a public domain
cross assembler for them. Some are table driven and you simply use the
correct table for the micro. You may be able to replace a 48 with a newer 51
but I'd have to check the specs, clock speed stuff, etc. Both come in 40 pin
dip packages.
