there is a piece by james tenney, who also worked at bell labs back in the
day, called 'for anne rising' which uses an idea similar to the one shepard
was working with, except tenney didn't just use octaves.
jim tenney's music is really worth checking out if you're interested in the
'roots' of much of what is talked about on this list. there was a
collection of his music released a couple of years ago, but i forget the
title/label right now. you should be able to find it just by looking up
james tenney. 'for anne rising' is on that cd.
