  Reminds me of when I first built a Moog VCF based on a transistor-only
  schem I got from Gene. I screwed something up and couldn't get it to
  work. In an attempt at getting *some* kind of filter I graphed the Ric
  Miller Moog VCF's op-amp based input and output section to the transistor
  ladder "heart" I had already built. The result was a heavy distortion VCF
  with a strange sound. I never made it into a full module, but a I have
  the protoboard sitting in my dresser / workbench (sad but true) waiting
  for a rainy day....
