I think the reason that so much effort is put into this, is because if
you're seriously considering constructing and manufacturing a modern
commercial synthesizer today, you're bound to go digital. Otherwise
the price tag of the final product would be way to high to appeal to
any but the most enthusiastic synthesists (ie we :-)

If you can find a way to digitally simulate eg the famous Moog VCF
and implement this in a modern synth (a'la NordLead), its almost
certain that you can make money out of it...

Luckily (for us) it will be quite some time before a digital simulation
of a VCF can really compete with the real thing ;)
