I Met Bernie

Hello AHers and synth-diyers,
Over the holiday weekend, I went to the Ithaca area to visit family. As
a side venture, I dropped in (pre-announced, of course) on Bernie
Hutchins at his Cornell office. We spent one of the swiftest 2.5 hours
of my life talking about things analog, digital, electronotes, academic,
musical, commercial, and on and on! Bernie, I am pleased to announce,
exists, is alive, continues to service snail-mail orders for
Electronotes materials, continues to publish Electronotes, and is
generally a very interesting guy. He was nice enough to see me, a total
stranger, and seems to be a reasonable sort. If you think you may have
ruffled his feathers or he yours, I'd like to recommend putting forth
the effort to smooth things over. It will be a fruitfull venture, IMHO.
Not wanting to speak for Bernie, and not asking him outright, I did get
the impression that if certain conditions were met, it might be possible
to get his blessing to display schematic diagrams on selected web sites.
If credit is given, (à la the References sections found in Electronotes)
and the need to purchase Electronotes from Bernie is increased, not
decreased, then I think that he would be more open to web publishing of
Electronotes schematics. As I said, I don't wish to speak for Bernie.
These are just my impressions. I implore you, do NOT construe my
impressions to be permission. Please, do not publish Electronotes
material on your web sites without Bernie's express permission. Having
said all that, I'd also like to add that my impression of the members of
these two lists is that most, if not all, would rather pay Bernie for
their pirate copies of the PCC or order a copy direct from him rather
than rip him off.
I had a great time meeting Bernie and found him to be very approachable.
