DIY rack spacers?

Alright, it's not synth equipment and it doesn't even make noise. But
a number of people on synth-diy seem to be real knowedgable about this
type of thing.
I'd like to get a bunch of rack spacers -- you know, thin pieces of metal
that just occupy a number of rack spaces, and sometimes have things painted
on them. These things are $10 or $20 (or more) a pop from music places.
There's gotta be a cheaper way to do this.
The main problem I can see is that I can't drill "slots" for screws. A
friend suggested finding a machine shop to just make a bunch, maybe from
scrap. Is this realistic?
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
