If you're not tight for $$$, I'd recommend 1/8" material and use it for
the faceplate - no backing plate.

Most of the stuff we've done hase been black type on silver, although if
you go the other way, you don't need a negative.  Durability should be
the same either way - you have to remove metal to get the design off, once
it's cured.
