Maybe this works for the status read back but there can be problems with
reading back data from the LCD (character RAM,...). 
But be careful if the display is connected to the standard microcontroller
bus - you have to use a tristate output for that gate that is controlled by
the R/W-Line and maybe the Enable-Line (depends on how the display is
controlled).
