Max038 (not to be confused with 8038) could be fine otherwise,
but it's frequency range is somewhat limited. It accepts
current input, so you could in theory get nice exponential
performance. If the price is not factor, just give it a try.
Maybe you could get free samples from Maxim for your
experiments. Otherwise, Electronotes tri/square with sine
waveshaper is winner (and maybe less expensive, too).
Look for synth-diy archives what Gene told about that
tri/square design and costs.
