There is such research going on. This research is among the more decent onces
(even considering sexually transmitted packets)... there are such things as
hooking in to the nerve systems to increese the "typing" speed, to hook into
the visual nerves to provide an visual world without the helmet and other more
and less bizzare things.

Personally I don't beleive in making enhancments to the body in such way, but
using the body as a carieer for small signals migth be acceptable, since this
is in a way allready used on touch-sensitive keyboards (Synthi AKS) and 
buttons.

Either way, I am far from convinced it's really a Synth DIY topic but may still
have some interest.
