Swapping LCD panels

	A lot of lcd displays used are standard of the shelf parts. I think
	they're made (or at least licensed) by Hitachi. They are mainly
	alphanumeric (characters on a 5x7 grid) and go for 1x16 characters
	upwards.

	I got hold of an lcd FAQ a while back, I think it was from the
	sci.electronics usenet group. 

	So if you have the Hitachi type lcd, it should be no problem to
	put a backlit version in. I don't know how cheap (or not) these
	things are in your part of the world, but shop around. In the
	UK for a 2x40 display you can go from 50 down to around 15 UK
	pounds.
